You all are in for treat with today's episode. I'm going to keep the intro short so we can get right in to it. Krystle Warren is one of my favorite musicians, and she's highly influential too. I always see one or two famous artists at her shows, showing up incognito to soak up the richness that is her music.

It's a hard act to describe, but that’s ok because she's got several records out, to which you can go listen after we talk here. I'll just say there's a depth of connection which she has that is incredibly rare to find. If this is your first time finding out about her, it’s your lucky day.

She's from Kansas City but she lives in France. I met her in New York many years ago and we recorded our chat in LA on the patio at the home of bassist Solomon Dorsey, another great musician who I hope to speak to on this show someday.

Solomon is in Krystle's band, The Faculty. They had just played a set at the Hotel Cafe the night before, so there’s a bit of afterglow mixed with the inevitable nuts and bolts of how she runs a band and ways to handle a talkative audience.

Let’s get right to it.

We're all contending with a mutating professional landscape, jacked revenue streams and a lot of noise out there in the culture. But you gotta keep playing.

We don't draw any lines here between scenes or styles.

As always, thank you for listening and remember to play it like its music.

Play It Like It's Music
Purists may whine that the best days of music are behind us, that capital “M” music has seen its peak and is no longer relevant. But here at Play It Like It's Music we believe the opposite: not only is the act of musicmaking an essential life skill with a lineage stretching back to the beginnings of human history, but the vocation of the professional musician is more vital today than it ever has been. Once a month, join musician, songwriter and producer Trevor Exter as he drops in on working musicians from every genre.
